Two of the biggest talent houses of the Bollywood industry; Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan may just reunite for a film after a hiatus of 11 long years. Yes, that right. Ace director Mani Ratnam has approached the actors for a ‘bigger than Baahubali‘ period drama film on a very high budget.

Mr. Ratnam is planning to make a magnum opus with an ensemble cast that will feature Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and many famous personalities from the south industry. It is also believed that Aishwarya has already signed the dotted line; while Sr. Bachchan has read the script and liked the concept, but is yet to give a final nod.

A source close to these developments has revealed to a leading daily,” It’s a big-budget historical drama, which is being planned on the lines of the Baahubali franchise. It’s likely to be a bilingual project and star several other big names from the South Indian film industry.”

Talking about the ‘Sholay‘ actor; the source has said,” Mani has narrated the script to Amitji. He is taking his time to decide whether he would like to do it. A confirmation from his end is yet to come but he has liked the idea.”

Further talking about the cast of the film; the source has been quoted saying,” There will be an ensemble cast. The actors have already been asked to give bulk dates and commit a few years to this film, as it will be made in several parts. The book has five volumes, but the makers are planning to conceptualize it as three installments on screen.”

The film; which is said to be an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s famous book; Ponniyin Selvan (The Son of Ponni), which narrates the story of Rajaraja Chola I during the 10th and 11th century.

On the professional front; Aishwarya’s last film ‘Fanney Khan‘ had failed to impress the viewers and so did Amitabh Bachchan’s magnum opus ‘Thugs of Hindostan‘. The film miserably tanked on the box office.

The big announcement of Mani Ratnam’s film is expected to be made on the day of Pongal, i.e. the 14th of January.
