Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard has weighed in on the “greatest footballer of all time” debate, claiming that Lionel Messi deserves the crown ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi reached a unique milestone in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Eibar on Sunday night, when he became the first player ever to score 400 goals in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The Argentine and Ronaldo have dominated the headlines for the past decade as far as the Ballon d’Or title is concerned, with the duo having each won the famous accolade five times. However, their dominance of the award was ended in 2018, when Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric pipped them to the prestigious crown after helping Croatia reach the FIFA World Cup final and winning the UEFA Champions League once again with Los Blancos.
Hazard, who is viewed by many as a potential heir to the Ballon d’Or throne, has now categorically stated that he feels Messi is better than Ronaldo.
“There aren’t two GOATs (Greatest Of All Time), there’s only one and it’s him (Messi),” the Blues star stated in an interview with Belgian publication HLN.
“My two matches against Barcelona were far from my favourite memories of 2018, but I was happy to face Barcelona and Messi.
“It didn’t turn out how I wanted, though. I was disappointed.”
The Belgian attacker has netted 10 goals and assisted a further 10 strikes in 21 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League so far this season.
