Strictly Come Dancing: Five week 12 routines we loved from Joe McFadden’s American Smooth to Caroline Flack’s Salsa – Evening Standard

It’s semi-final weekend on Strictly Come Dancing with five couples hoping to win enough votes to battle it out in one last round.

Famed for putting the dancers through two routines, the semi-final week is the toughest our celebrities would have had it so far.

For the last five years, week 12 has been the semi-final. For two years before that, week 12 was actually the third from last and before that, it was either the final or, well, non-existent.

Here are our top five routines from week 12…

Series 6 (2008): Tom Chambers and Camilla Dallerup – Foxtrot

An elegant and graceful Chambers led Dallerup, dressed in a mint green dress, around the ballroom with poise to classic track Here You Come Again.

The duo scored 39, with Craig Revel Horwood being the full house spoiler. Two weeks later (Strictly went through a couple years of 14 week series) he lifted the glitterball trophy.

Series 11 (2013): Natalie Gumede and Artem Chigvintsev – Salsa

Gumede’s dance was perfectly summed up in three words – fast, furious and fun. And there wasn’t a lack of technique either!

A strong Latin lead all the way through the competition, the actress managed a perfect 40 for her dance to Wanna Be Starting Something. They made the final the following week, but lost to Abbey Clancy and Aljaž Skorjanec.

Series 12 (2014): Caroline Flack and Pasha Kovalev – Salsa

Flack was a vision in hot pink as she shimmied around the floor to Maria by Ricky Martin, showing off her impressive hip action and footwork.

The routine, which was their second of the night, the first being a Foxtrot, earned them their first perfect 40 of the series. The following week, the couple got three full houses and lifted the glitterball.

Series 14 (2016): Ore Oduba and Joanne Clifton – Quickstep

Presenter Oduba and partner Clifton danced up a storm with their fast and furious Quickstep to Are You Gonna Be My Girl?

Draped in Jet black outfits, the pair scored 38 for their first dance of the evening, which helped them top the leaderboard at the end of the night – they got 39 for their second dance. A week later, they were crowned winners.

Series 15 (2017): Joe McFadden and Katya Jones – American Smooth

The couple danced their first routine of the semi-final evening to the rather apt Have You Met Miss Jones? Complete with elegant lines and swan-like lifts, McFadden and Jones had the audience captivated with their traditional ballroom performance.

They scored 35 for their dance, and 35 for their Argentine Tango, which left them joint second on the leaderboard. But they made it to the top spot the week after and are the reigning champions of Strictly.

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One, tonight at 6:35pm
