‘More goals than Lionel Messi’: Barcelona star butt of Juan Foyth joke after Tottenham win

The 20-year-old centre-back scored the only goal of the game as Spurs ran out 1-0 winners at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening.

He reacted first as Palace failed to clear a corner and headed home his first-ever goal in English football.

And Toby Alderweireld was quick to lead the tributes, while aiming a cheeky joke at Foyth’s fellow Argentine Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

“Already more Premier League goals than Messi,” the Belgian said on Twitter.

“Big future ahead Juan Foyth.”

Foyth recovered after a nightmare performance against Wolves last week which saw him give away two penalties in a narrow 3-2 victory.

And Dele Alli said the youngster deserves all the praise after putting that behind him to turn in a stellar display.

“Juan deserves a lot of credit,” Alli told BT Sport.

“It says a lot about his character after conceding those two penalties at Wolves.

“He works hard every day in training and he’s come in today and got the winner.”

Boss Pochettino echoed Alli’s words and expects Foyth to get even better with time.

“We were talking a lot in the week that, that (Foyth’s errors in the last match) is football,” he said.

“I was a centre-back and you’re involved in these situations The trust from us is massive and from his team-mates.

“He has great potential and showed real character. It’s important for him to feel like he’s a Premier League player.

“He’s so clever. That situation can happen. With experience he’s going to improve and make mistakes and less mistakes.

“That will happen with 29 or 30-year-old players. He moved on and we all helped him forget (the penalties against Wolves).”
