President Donald Trump this morning said, about the ongoing vote count in Broward County, Florida, “If you look at the person, in this case a woman, involved, she has had a horrible history, and all of a sudden they’re finding votes out of nowhere.” He is upset that counting votes in urban areas of Florida takes a long time—and that those urban votes tend to go for Democrats. But why throw in “in this case a woman”? How does that strengthen his argument? Is being a woman itself evidence against a person?
Well, he does have a miles-long record of insulting women he feels threatened by, and insulting them if not just on the basis of womanhood itself than at least in terms of traditional stereotypical measures of femininity. There are too many examples to count. He called Stormy Daniels “Horseface.” He called Omarosa Manigault Newman, after she insulted him in a book she wrote, a “dog.” He called Arianna Huffington a “dog,” too. He charged Mika Brzezinski with “bleeding badly from a face-lift,” and Megyn Kelly with having “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.” He tweeted an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz next to a flattering one of Melania Trump with the caption “A picture is worth a thousand words.” He said of Carly Fiorina, “Look at that face! . . . Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?” Those are just a few examples. For more, check out this article. Or this encyclopedic log of 24 years’ worth of insults.
In today’s age of women’s empowerment and #MeToo, what is a male leader to do when he feels threatened by a woman? Sensitivities have been heightened, and many men worry often about saying things that will be taken the wrong way. But take a cue from the leader most of America has seen on video boasting of his ability to sexually assault women without repercussions, and what you say will be guaranteed never to be taken the wrong way. If a woman threatens you, lash out at her not for how she’s threatening you, but as a woman.
After all, all they’re trying to do in Broward County is count the vote.
